An intimate, connection-led guide to eloping at Lago di Braies by North American wedding photographers based in Europe.
There are places in the world that feel touched by something ancient and breathtaking, places where the light slows down, the air softens, and you feel like you’re witnessing the world take its first morning breath.
Lago di Braies at sunrise is one of those places.
Nestled deep in the Dolomites, the lake glows with a quiet, ethereal magic. The mountains rise around you like cathedral walls, the water is still and glassy, and for a few fleeting moments… you feel as though the entire world exists only for the two of you.
This is why couples across the world — especially those yearning for an experience that blends romance, adventure, and intimacy — choose this place for their elopement or engagement story.
And for us, as North American photographers living in Europe, guiding couples through this landscape is one of our greatest joys. We bring the familiarity and ease of home, the clarity of native English communication, and the deep local knowledge that helps your experience feel seamless, unrushed, and deeply human.
This is your guide to what a sunrise elopement at Lago di Braies truly feels like — and how to create an experience that reflects the heart of your relationship.
It’s not just the scenery.
It’s the feeling it gives you.
Before the world wakes, the lake is calm, the dock is empty, and the only sound is water brushing softly against wooden boats. Sunrise here feels cinematic, like you're stepping into a moment meant just for you.
The Dolomites make you feel both grounded and alive. Their presence creates a sense of awe, making every moment feel both intimate and epic.
Soft pastel skies, glowing peaks, and dusky blues reflecting off the water, it’s a palette that feels romantic and effortless.
Eloping here feels like running away to a hidden world, a place where tradition meets adventure and beauty feels infinite.
This is the heart of our work.
We’re not here to create perfect poses or staged moments.
We’re here to help you feel connected, grounded, and fully yourselves, so when you look back at your photos, they feel like you.
Gentle Direction, Not Stiff Posing
We guide you into natural movement and connection, so nothing feels forced. Your photos don’t look like everyone else's, because it’s how you uniquely come together (not a pose from a card deck).
Presence Over Performance
Our sessions feel like a beautiful experience you have together, not a performance for the camera.
Our couples tell us constantly:
“We thought we would feel awkward, but it was so much more natural and fun than we expected.”
Especially the grooms.
We hear that from grooms every single time.
We create emotional safety first
Most of our couples haven’t been photographed in a setting this grand before.
We help you settle into it with ease:
Your photos show how the experience felt, not just how it looked
Your photos will feel:
Your experience deserves to be felt, not performed.
This is one of your greatest differentiators, so we lean into it.
For many of our couples, having photographers who feel like home makes all the difference, particularly in a remote, iconic location like the Dolomites.
No miscommunication.
No lost nuance.
No stress around instructions or planning.
We understand:
Speaking in your home language, especially in an intimate moment, changes everything.
You soften.
You relax.
You trust.
And trust creates beautiful, connected photos.
We bring the best of both worlds:
This balance helps us guide you through your experience with clarity and confidence.
Picture this:
You arrive before sunrise, the world still hushed around you.
The lake is a sheet of mirrored glass.
Soft pinks and golds sweep across the sky as the mountains catch the first light.
The boats rock gently.
The air is cool and crisp.
Everything feels unbelievably peaceful.
We start slowly, no rushing, no performing, just the two of you settling into each other while the world wakes up around you.
You laugh.
You breathe.
You hold hands.
You take the morning in as though it belongs to you alone.
This is the part our couples remember most, not just the photos, but the feeling of being fully present together in one of the most beautiful places on earth.
Sunrise is always best for:
You can rent exclusive access to the Lago Di Braies boathouse (La Palafitta) in advance. This is the best way to ensure privacy during your elopement, as Lago di Braies is a popular spot for tourists year round. If you plan on incorporating florals, booking the boathouse is essential. For 600 euros, you get exclusive access to the boathouse and two boats (no other boats are rented out on the lake during this time). Remember, the booking goes ahead irrespective of the weather. Fog over the mountains is common, and can actually be quite dreamy in your photos!

Yes — ideally 30 minutes before your boathouse booking to ensure no traffic slowdowns, etc.
Late spring and early fall offer the most consistent weather and fewer crowds.

Yes! Planning your elopement at Lago Di Braies involves several key considerations to ensure your day is seamless and magical. We recommend hiring a planner who specializes in international elopements in Italy. There are several very good options and we’re happy to provide recommendations - we know it can feel overwhelming when you start searching.
It’s possible for foreigners to get married in Italy but requires some foresight and typically 6-8 months for the paperwork. This often includes obtaining an Atto Notorio and a Nulla Osta from your respective consulate - your elopement planner will provide this information. Many of our couples choose to handle the legalities of marriage in their home country, and have a symbolic ceremony in the Dolomites.
If you choose to go with a symbolic wedding ceremony there are no permits or fees required. You do not require a photography permit to document your Dolomites elopement.
No. Just no. It’s expressly forbidden and I’d encourage you to think deeply about why you’d want to try and get around the rules that are meant to protect this incredible place. I’ve watched photographers lose sight of their drones at Lago di Braies and almost crash into people. Trust me, we can make epic photos without the drone. We will not do drone photography at Lago di Braies.
Because comfort and communication matter — especially in emotional, intimate moments. When you feel understood, you feel at ease. And when you feel at ease, your photos feel authentic.

A Dolomites elopement doesn’t need to be a single moment — it can be a full, immersive experience woven across valleys, ridgelines, and alpine meadows.
Most of our couples choose to expand their day (or weekend) into something deeper, more playful, and more naturally reflective of their relationship.
Below is a curated, connection-led way to experience the region — one that blends romance, adventure, quiet intimacy, and cinematic landscapes.
A Dolomites elopement can absolutely be an all-day adventure — but it’s important to build it around realistic travel times, lift schedules, and the rhythm of the mountains.
Below is a thoughtfully paced itinerary we often recommend to couples wanting a multi-location experience.
It balances adventure with presence, giving you time to breathe, connect, and truly experience the magic of each place.
We’ve included realistic timing based on June (peak sunrise, earlier boathouse opening) and September (softer light, later start times).
Because the boathouse (La Palafitta) controls access to the dock and boats, if you’d like the private rental of the boathouse, your session cannot begin before their opening time:
This aligns beautifully with the early morning glow. The light is soft, the lake is calm, and there’s still a sense of quiet intimacy.
Session timing: ~1.5 hours
Expected start: 6:30 or 7:30am
Expected end: 8:00–9:00am
We begin gently — slow movement, natural connection, deep breaths.
It’s the perfect emotional grounding point for your elopement day.
From Lago di Braies, the drive to Seceda (Ortisei or Furnes lift station) takes:
Then you’ll take:
Total travel + lift time: ~2–2.5 hours
Midday light here can be beautiful — especially when diffused by thin alpine clouds.
The long grass, sharp Odle peaks, and sweeping ridges offer a cinematic, otherworldly feel.
After your Seceda session, you can:
We love helping couples choose something that feels calm and grounding — a reminder that elopements are meant to be felt, not rushed.
After lunch, you’ll:
Seceda → Tre Cime drive time: ~1 hr 45 min
Plus: potential delays at the road toll gate during peak seasons
Realistic arrival: ~4:00–5:00pm
Tre Cime is spectacular at golden hour.
Soft light pours over the mountains, and the whole landscape warms into a cinematic glow.
From the parking area at Rifugio Auronzo, the most iconic Tre Cime viewpoint is a 25–30 minute walk along a wide gravel path. It’s an accessible, scenic route that gives you sweeping mountain views without needing a strenuous hike — perfect for golden-hour or sunset sessions.
Sunset session: 5:00–7:30pm
(No need to stay until full sunset — you’ll still catch the best light.)
Yes — for adventurous couples who want a full, immersive day and are comfortable with:
It’s not a “run everywhere” day — it’s a beautifully paced, meaningful journey across some of the most iconic landscapes in Europe.
While this itinerary is entirely possible in one day, many of our couples choose to split it into two days for a more grounded, presence-filled experience.
For example:
This allows you to savor each moment rather than compressing three icons into one day.
We help every couple design a timeline that aligns with:
Your elopement should feel spacious, not rushed.

You’ll find:
It’s a beautiful choice for couples who value privacy and emotional connection.
For a softer, more romantic look, Lago di Caldaro offers:
It offers a peaceful contrast to the alpine drama of the northern Dolomites — perfect for couples who want a blend of adventure and warmth.
Where to Stay Nearby:Pension Leuchtenburg: a charming retreat with vineyard views and an intimate, slow-paced atmosphere.
Because your elopement isn’t just a ceremony.
It’s an experience, a story, a feeling, and a memory you’ll treasure for the rest of your lives.
Adding additional locations:
Most importantly — it gives you time.
Time to breathe.
Time to connect.
Time to be present with one another in one of the most beautiful places on earth.
Your story deserves to be felt deeply — not rushed, staged, or overshadowed by logistics.
If you’re dreaming of a sunrise experience at Lago di Braies that feels:

“We couldn't have asked for a better wedding photographer, from the initial meeting through the design of an album to cherish all our photos over the years. We were so happy to find someone who was kind, thoughtful, and wonderful to work with, but who also blended seamlessly into the background to capture all the in-between moments. Alecia was such a support through the planning process, and her calm, caring presence was there throughout the day. And the photos! Beyond being absolutely gorgeous, they authentically captured the essence of our wedding and all the love that was present. Thank you. Thank you again for helping to create such a special day for us. We look forward to an opportunity to take photos with you again in the future!”
