Sometimes, the stars align for your shoot. Everyone arrives on time, the weather is perfect, the light is soft and glowy and all goes according to plan. Other times it looks like it’s going to pour rain, which makes the micro-breweries less busy, you interact with wonderful people at these establishments and you stumble upon a private field of flowers in which to give the lovely couple a moment of privacy for a surprise wedding proposal. If I’m being honest, I’d take the rollercoaster option every time, if you know me this is obvious (hello moves the whole family twice per year from Canada to Europe!). And so it went for this surprise wedding proposal at Matron Fine Beer in Bloomfield, Prince Edward County.
Full disclosure, this is my little sister. She is an angel and deserves the absolute best things in life. When her partner Luke called me out of the blue from Bluboho in Toronto to ask my thoughts on her engagement ring I was actually squealing. Skip ahead a couple of months and we planned a micro-brewery tour for Luke and Brittany in Prince Edward County (in our TESLA). Being a photographer’s sister Brittany was completely on board to have her photo taken throughout the tour, and participate in a “mini couple’s session” at the end. Luke planned to surprise Brittany with his wedding proposal during a quiet moment at the couples session. We visited our three favorite micro-breweries, Gillingham Brewing Company, Parsons Brewing Company and Matron Fine Beer (Prince Eddy’s is also a favorite but we couldn’t squeeze it in this time!), and finished at Matron because of the beautiful wildflower gardens and relative privacy.
Partway through the session, we told Luke and Britt to walk towards the middle of the field of flowers. Then we took a step back and got in position. We gave them all the space, and shot from a distance and then… this magical scene developed.
Ok friends, cue the waterworks. At this point, I couldn’t see a dang thing. I kept shooting through this moment despite the tears streaming down my face. I won’t keep you in suspense, she said yes to a beautiful sapphire engagement ring from Bluboho Toronto.
When they were ready to rejoin us we celebrated and captured the absolute bliss that emanated from the two of them. Surprise proposals in a field of wild flowers for the win, every dang time!
I mean, you can’t make up the happiness on those faces.
